How to Clean Outdoor Rattan Furniture

Woven rattan is beautiful in outdoor furniture and, contrary to popular belief, they’re actually pretty sturdy. For as long as you buy them from reputable manufacturers and take care of them properly, you can expect them to last for decades.

For rattan furniture maintenance, the most important thing you need to do is clean thoroughly and on a regular basis. Here’s what you can do to properly clean your outdoor rattan furniture:

Remove all cushions for separate cleaning.

Vacuum with a soft brush attachment to get rid of loose dirt. This way, you won’t accumulate dirt in crevices when you wipe.

Look closely for any stubborn dirt and use a soft toothbrush to spot-clean.

In a spray bottle, combine 1 cup warm water with 2 tablespoons mild dish soap. Use this on a microfiber rag to wipe the furniture. Always spray this mixture onto the rag, never directly onto the rattan.

If your rattan furniture is made of synthetic fiber, you won’t need to wipe a second time. If it’s made of natural fiber, it’s a good idea to use a completely dry microfiber cloth for a second pass to minimize the risk for rot or mildew.

Replace any cushions only after the weaves are completely dry.

Depending on the outdoor conditions in your area, you’ll probably only need thorough cleaning about once or twice a year. However, it’s always a good idea to wipe the wicker surfaces with a microfiber cloth at least once a month.
